As part of its inquiry into e-cigarette regulation and compliance in New South Wales (NSW), the Committee on Law and Safety, to which I am a member, has released its final report to address the Federal Government’s new legislation and concerns from NSW residents, many from my Electorate.
The inquiry was established to examine the current situation in New South Wales regarding e-cigarette use ('vaping'), its prevalence among children and young people, and the impact of programs and services aimed at preventing uptake.
The inquiry investigated the effectiveness of New South Wales' current regulatory framework and explored ways to address challenges in enforcement and compliance. The Committee also considered how New South Wales partners with the Federal Government to implement reforms on e-cigarette products.
59 submissions were received from government agencies, public health organisations, advocacy groups, medical professionals, academics, and members of the community. The submissions, in addition to two days of hearings from 26 individual witnesses, informed the Committee’s Final Report.
The Committee’s Report made 10 findings and 13 recommendations to protect the community from the harms of vaping. These include more resourcing for NSW Health, developing digital tools to support, young people from vaping, and aligning state laws with new federal legislation.
The full report is available to read on the NSW Parliament website here.
