Heathcote MP Maryanne Stuart said the NSW Government’s decision to ban external gambling room signage – like VIP lounges – in pubs and clubs by September will help address problem gambling throughout the state.
The move – a key election promise from the NSW Government – will result in clubs and pubs being notified next week that all external gambling signs will need to be removed, concealed or altered before September 1.
The announcement follows the NSW Government’s decision to introduce legislation banning political parties from accepting donations from clubs with poker machines.
Venues will be given an additional three months to remove signage should circumstances outside their control impact compliance.
The maximum fine for those who fail to comply with the new standards will be 100 penalty points – or an $11,000 fine for each offence.
Mrs Stuart said the ban showed the NSW Government was serious when it came to cracking down on problem gambling,.
“This is the first step to tackling problem gambling not just in the Heathcote electorate, but throughout the entire state,” she said.
“We know that problem gambling destroys lives and families, and it is an issue that cannot be swept under the rug.
“This is an important measure that will make a real difference.”
