Heathcote MP Maryanne Stuart said the four bushfire forums she hosted throughout her electorate would ensure more residents could be prepared in case of a bushfire emergency.
The forums were held over the past few weekends in Thirroul, Helensburgh, Bundeena and Engadine, and offered residents a chance to hear from all agencies that may be involved in an emergency.
Agencies and organisations that attended included: Rural Fire Services; NSW Police (both Wollongong and Sutherland PACs); National Parks and Wildlife: NSW Fire and Rescue; NSW Ambulance; Wollongong City Council; Red Cross; Surf Life Saving Illawarra; Garie Road Surf Life Saving Club; and Transport for NSW.
The key take aways from the forums were:
- Download the Hazards Near Me app to keep updated on nearby fires
- Prepare homes and property by cleaning gutters, cleaning and clearing areas surrounding homes, and ensuring flammable material, like firewood, is not stored near the home
- Have a leave plan that includes: places to go; and a go bag
Quotes attributable to Maryanne Stuart, Member for Heathcote:
“Experts have warned that we could be in for a potentially horrid bushfire season.
“The idea of a catastrophic bushfire anywhere, let alone here in the Heathcote electorate, is terrifying.
“We must do everything we can to prevent the loss of property and importantly, the loss of life.
“Thank you to all the members of those organisations and agencies who attended for taking the time to speak at the forums.
“Your commitment to protecting our community was certainly not lost on me or those who attended.”
