Excavation works on the Heathcote Road upgrade will see a temporary closure between New Illawarra Road and Forum Drive to all traffic from 8pm Friday 13 until 5am Monday 16 November.
State MP for Heathcote, Maryanne Stuart says when completed, the $180 million upgrade will improve traffic flows and reduce congestion between the Woronora River bridge and Lucas Heights.
Inspecting the road widening works, Ms Stuart said: “We are getting on with the job of delivering a safer, more reliable Heathcote Road. For too long, motorists have had to contend with frustrating delays and safety hazards along this stretch, significantly impacting the time taken to get to work, take the kids to school and go about their daily lives.”
The major lane duplication works began in September, widening the road and providing two lanes westbound. There will be several weekend closures, dates will be confirmed before each closure.
“This new work will give more than 28,000 motorists a continuous 2.5-kilometre passing lane from the Woronora River Bridge to the intersection with New Illawarra Road,” Ms Stuart said.
Protecting wildlife is also a priority, with fauna fencing, escape hatches and underpasses being installed along the project alignment to reduce the risk of vehicle strikes involving koalas and other animals.
Member for Heathcote, Maryanne Stuart said:
“Heathcote Road is a vital link in our road system, connecting the Sutherland Shire and the Illawarra to South-western Sydney.
Thank you to the Heathcote community for your advocacy over many years for this upgrade. It had been promised for 12 years before the Minns Labor came into office. I’m proud to be part of a Minns Labor Government that is listening to our community and delivering the road improvements locals need”.
Deanne Forrest, Executive Director Sydney and Active Transport Hub, Transport for NSW said:
“Transport understands that closures and detours can add time to people’s journeys and thanks motorists for their patience while we complete this important work. We encourage everyone to plan ahead, check Live Traffic and allow extra travel time.
