Work has commenced to restore public access to Garie Road in the Royal National Park and allowing Garie Surf Life Saving Club (GSLSC) to access their club.
Garie Road is a vital artery for residents of the Little Garie shack community, GSLSC and visitors, providing access to one of the region's most treasured beaches. The restoration efforts will address persistent land slippage that has impacted accessibility and safety at this location.
Transport for NSW (Transport) has appointed Fulton Hogan to complete the project, which involves moving a section of the road further into the hill and driving approximately 100 15-metre-long concrete piles into the side of the road for more than 150 metres.
This remedial work will see the road built back stronger, with greater resilience to future significant weather events.
The appointment of Fulton Hogan to fulfil the contract, will result in financial savings for taxpayers. Work is scheduled to be complete in July of 2025, weather permitting.
Transport has committed to exploring maintenance support options to assist the club with being operationally ready to reopen. National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) is continuing to carry out maintenance and repairs to buildings, paths and other structures that were also damaged in the Garie precinct to be ready for reopening.
This multi-agency remedial work will coincide with repairs to the Great Southern Walk Track being undertaken by NPWS. This 67-kilometre walk from Kamay Botany Bay National Park, through Royal National Park and into the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area will allow visitors to experience stunning coastal landscapes and places of national heritage significance.
While work is occurring on repairing Garie Road, the Garie Beach precinct is not available for public access. The Royal Coast Track is currently closed between Little Garie and Garie beaches and will remain closed over summer.
