Heathcote MP Maryanne Stuart said anticipation was building regarding the findings of a report into the state of the popular walking track, Sublime Point.
The Austinmer track was closed last year due to significant rainfall, much to the disappointment of many bushwalkers.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service is currently preparing a report, due to be completed mid-year, regarding the state of the track.
Mrs Stuart, via a Notice of Motion in the Parliament of NSW today, thanked the community for their patience whilst the report was being prepared.
The Notice of Motion stated the house:
- Recognises the Sublime Point walking track, a popular tourist destination, was closed last year due to heavy flooding
- Acknowledges the National Parks and Wildlife Service is conducting an investigation into the state of the walking track which is due mid-year
- Thanks the community for its patience whilst the investigation takes place
“The Sublime Point walking track is one of the most popular tracks in the Illawarra,” Mrs Stuart said.
“It’s not just locals who use it, the track is also a major drawcard with tourists as well.
“It’s easy to see why the trek through the picturesque escarpment receives so much foot traffic.
“Unfortunately, the deluge last year caused significant damage to the track which ultimately led to its closure.
“I thank Minister for Environment Penny Sharpe, as well as the National Parks and Wildlife Service, for preparing the report and looking at ways to reopen the track.
“I also thank the local community who have been extremely patient whilst the track has remained closed.”
