RESIDENTS URGED TO SHOW CAUTION REGARDING MIGRATORY SHORE BIRDS

28 July 2023

Heathcote MP Maryanne Stuart has urged Sutherland Shire residents and visitors to be wary and respectful of migratory shore birds in Port Hacking and Botany Bay areas.

Some of the birds, including the Eastern Curlew, fly from as far as Alaska, Japan, South Korea and the Yellow Sea.

In some instances, they travel 13,000 kilometres non-stop to their destination south of Sydney ahead of the mating season.

The birds are due to arrive to their destination in the coming days, where they will remain for months.

Mrs Stuart said it was important the birds were given space.

“Whether you are a resident or a visitor to the area, I would urge you to give the birds a wide berth,” Mrs Stuart said.

“The 13,000 kilometre, 13-day journey is no easy feat so the birds need time to rest and recuperate.

“That is extremely difficult to do when disturbed.

“Please ensure friends, family or pets also maintain an appropriate distance from the birds.
