Heathcote MP Maryanne Stuart has praised the Woronora community for their engagement in a community workshop held by the State Emergency Service (SES) at the Woronora RSL to prepare residents for emergency events.

The workshop was an opportunity for the SES to hear directly from the community about what worked and what did not work in the response to the flood events that occurred in 2022.

The event was also attended by Sutherland Shire Council, the Australian Red Cross and NSW Reconstruction Authority who provided information on the emergency responses and listened to residents about the issues that that they faced during that time.

Ms Stuart is determined to work with all stakeholders to create a community emergency reference group to prepare for future hazards in the area and to act as a key conduit between the local communities and emergency service partners.

Quotes attributable to Maryanne Stuart MP, Member for Heathcote:

“It was fantastic to hear from residents and businesses affected by flooding of the Woronora River at the workshop.”

“This community has suffered from four floods in the past two years. They don’t need more of the buck-passing that they had from the former Government and Sutherland Shire Council. They need practical solutions to avoid the mistakes of the past.”

“The NSW Government and I are listening to them, and we're determined to work with residents, businesses and all stakeholders to find practical solutions.”
