You can't help but admire emergency services workers. When others are fleeing a fire or a flood, emergency services workers like Rural Fire Service Illawarra/Sutherland Area Group Captain, Craig Robertson, race towards the emergency. That selfless attitude saw Craig recently awarded a Commissioner's Commendation in Bravery for his actions. On July 2, 2022, following days of pouring rain, Otford Rural Fire Service Brigade and Illawarra Group 1 were called to respond to a concern for welfare. When the crews arrived at Otford Train Station they could hear screams below from the Hacking River. Despite the poor light and deluge, the crews made their way to riverbank below. It was there where Craig located a man who was wedged in a tree that was surrounded by rapidly rising water. Craig responded by securing a rope to himself and an Otford RFS crew member, and made his way to the trapped man. Wading through fast moving water – at times 1.5 metres deep – Craig tied his rope to the man and the pair were eventually assisted from the water. It is with pleasure that I also recognise Craig for his incredible brave and selfless act on July 2, 2022.
